One of Benny Gordon's
Biggest Fans Loses Battle with Cancer
(October 13, 2007) - DuBois, PA. Harold "Hersh"
Hershberger of Dubois, PA. passes at the age of 70.
Memories and Thoughts written by Angie McCallister:
The sun rose and set around Benny Gordon. When it came to a race car
driver, there is NO other according to Hersh. We lost him this
past weekend from his long, long tough battle with cancer. He
and his family attended as many races as they could. Troy,
Hersh's grandson, eats, sleeps and loves Benny Gordon. Hersh
would bring him up to the shop every pit stop practice. Stop
watch in Hersh's hand, and knee pads on little Troy. The two
were part of the team. You should of seen it, little Troy
would run behind the guys and drop to his knees and change his own
pretend tire. Look over little Troy's shoulder to see the
biggest smile on Grandpa Hersh's face. It was an amazing site
to see.
Hersh's casket is black with red racing strips and two checkered
flags embroidered in the beautiful white satin liner. #66 proudly
displayed in between the flags and the bold black letters that read
"HERSH" Hersh had his Predator sweat shirt and hat on and in one
hand a baseball signed by the little league team that he coached for
many, many years and in the other...A Stopwatch. This is
exactly what Hersh wanted.
We will miss you, our neighbor, our friend, our fan.
Ben sat with Hersh and the two watched the Daytona 500 together.
Hersh will always be a part of Ben's life as he has been since the
age of 5. May you rest in peace and continue to click that
stopwatch and cheer so hard as you will always be in our hearts.
We love you Hersh!
