Myrtle Beach, SC — With three races down in the Championship Series, it’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Following the Dan Duncan Memorial Aaron’s 250 at South Georgia Motorsports Park, all the players will be known.

Right now, mathematically, 31 drivers are still in the hunt to become the overall Hooters Pro Cup Series National Champion and claim the $150,000 bonus that goes along with it.

Bobby Gill still holds the top spot, but Trevor Bayne closed to within 15 points with his win at Myrtle Beach. Mike Garvey is within earshot of the leaders, sitting just 54 points behind Gill.

With just 98 points between them, the top eight drivers still have a legitimate chance to take the title.

Brandon Ward still holds down the top spot in the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year program, leading Richard Boswell by 53 points. If Ward can hang on, the rookie could walk away with more than $40,000 in rookie bonuses.

Below is the top 20 in Championship Series points, a Myrtle Beach Review and a South Georgia Preview.

Benny Gordon - 2007

8. Benny Gordon (Car No. 66n Samuel Metals/The Works Ford)
Finish at Myrtle Beach: 9th
Championship Series Points: 478
Points behind 1st: 98
Points ahead of 9th: 14
Point positions gained/lost at Myrtle Beach: +1
Season Avg. Finish: 9.85
Championship Avg. Finish: 16.3

Myrtle Beach Review
Most people would take a top-10 finish at Myrtle Beach Speedway, but most people don’t have the record that Benny Gordon has at MBS. Gordon’s ninth-place finish gained him one spot in the points, but he only gained two points on Gill.

South Georgia Preview
Gordon needs to repeat his performance of a year ago at SGMP. Needing a win to get back into title contention, Gordon led a race-high 142 laps en route to victory in the Championship Series event. If he can do that again, he should be about 50 points out of first going into the final race of the year.

Best Finish at South Georgia: 1st (11/11/06)
Starts: 2
